The Bell Cage

The bells in East Bergholt are unique in that they are still rung by hand.

The cage was erected as a temporary measure in 1531 and has been in regular use ever since. Originally it was said to have stood in the east part of the churchyard until the 17th century, when it was moved to its present location on the wish and at the expense of Mr Joseph Chaplin, because the noise of the bells was disliked by the family at Old Hall.

The bells were removed from the cage in 1972 to enable restoration work to be carried out and rehung, this time on ball bearings, in 1973.

The bells are normally rung at these times. They are also rung for weddings throughout the year.
